Samsung DeX's Expanding Ecosystem Pushes the Possibilities of the Smartphone

October 19, 2017

The DeX ecosystem continues to expand with strategic partnerships and app development community. With help from key partners and productivity, collaboration, content creation, and entertainment content providers, the DeX experience is better than ever.

At Samsung, we continuously ask ourselves what else is possible, and what else we can do to bring a better experience for our users. Samsung DeX was literally drawn on a piece of paper after asking these simple but important questions and became what it is today, bringing a desktop-like experience to your smartphone.

We brought this desktop-like experience to our users, realizing that they want the convenience of their mobile device but also sometimes need the tried-and-true desktop computing environment, especially when it comes to interacting with productivity tools and entertainment contents that are best viewed on a larger monitor. With Samsung DeX, we believe that we can close that very chasm.

Earlier this year, we introduced Samsung DeX to push the possibilities of the smartphone by enabling users to enjoy a desktop-like environment while still harnessing the power of Samsung’s cutting-edge mobile experience through the Note8, Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The DeX ecosystem continues to expand with our strategic partnerships and app development community. This growth is a key to its success. To that end, we are making substantial progress with help from key partners and productivity, collaboration, content creation, and entertainment content providers.

Samsung DeX’ s user experience is also applicable to developers. Although it’s in trial phase, Linux on Galaxy is our innovative solution to bring the Linux experience on PC to mobile, and then further onto a larger display with Samsung DeX. Now developers can code using their mobile on-the-go and seamlessly continue the task on a larger display with Samsung DeX.

Installed as an app, Linux on Galaxy gives smartphones the capability to run multiple operating systems, enabling developers to work with their preferred Linux-based distributions on their mobile devices. Whenever they need to use a function that is not available on the smartphone OS, users can simply switch to the app and run any program they need to in a Linux OS environment.

Linux on Galaxy is made even more powerful because it is DeX-enabled, giving developers the ability to create content on a large screen, powered only by their mobile device. This represents a significant step forward for software developers, who can now set up a fully functional development environment with all the advantages of a desktop setting that is accessible anytime, anywhere. Samsung Linux on Galaxy is still a work in progress. If you are interested in getting an early notification of availability, then please sign up at seap.samsung.com/linux-on-galaxy

In addition to expanding the capabilities of the smartphone, the power of Samsung DeX to seamlessly transform mobile devices to a desktop environment has also taken the gaming experience to the next level. Samsung’s desire to redefine modern-day entertainment has led to key partnerships with major game developers, including Super Evil Megacorp’s Vainglory, Game Insight’s Survival Arena, Eric Froemling’s BombSquad and Netmarble’s Lineage 2 Revolution to give users the option to play their favorite mobile games in an immersive desktop setting. What’s more, Lingeage 2 Revolution and Nexon’s AxE are among the wide range of titles that are embracing Vulkan API, bringing more robust and responsive performance and power efficiency to mobile device gaming. Now that these games have become DeX-enabled, avid gamers can interact with the games in full screen mode on a larger display with full keyboard and mouse control, in addition to playing them on-the-go. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY XV POCKET EDITION will provide both Vulkan and DeX optimized gaming experience in coming months.

As Samsung DeX’s ecosystem continues to grow with ever-expanding partnerships with third party developers, new enriching experiences will be brought to smartphone users, helping them realize a seamlessly connected life. We believe Samsung DeX will see additional adoption because of its unique experience in the near future.
