Meet the Generation17 Young Leaders: The Story of Shomy Chowdhury

December 5, 2020

Introducing Shomy Chowdhury, the Generation17 Young Leader from Bangladesh who is dedicated to saving lives through her clean water and sanitation movement.

Shomy Chowdhury from Bangladesh is one of our featured Generation17 Young Leaders. Shomy was inspired to follow in her father’s footsteps and give back to her community – completing over 400 hours of community service in the U.S. After her mother passed away from water sanitation issues, she was inspired to educate over 3,000 local Bangladesh workers about proper sanitation and hygiene.

From this work, Shomy felt a need to do more - ultimately founding Awareness 360 - an organization that aims to help people all over the world address the 17 Global Goals. The organization now spans across 23 countries and has benefited over 150,000 people. As long as young people are united, Shomy believes we can face any challenge.

Generation17 is an initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that aims to harness technology to elevate the voices of young leaders around the globe who are working to achieve the Global Goals over the next 10 years. Established by the United Nations in 2015, the Global Goals - or Sustainable Development Goals - provide a framework to address pressing global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change and peace and justice, and build a better future for all by 2030.
