Samsung Galaxy Camera Honored as First Digital Camera Awarded Platinum UL Environment Certification

April  2, 2013 , GALAXY Camera

Premium connected digital camera meets strict environmental standards and showcases Samsung’s continued sustainability leadership

DALLAS - April 2, 2013 - Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) has been awarded platinum certification by UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), for its Samsung Galaxy Camera™. The certification is based on UL 2810, sustainability requirements for digital cameras.

The Galaxy Camera is the first digital camera to receive such a certification and is considered the highest environmental ranking based on UL Environment’s certification requirements. To achieve certification, a mobile device must earn at least 60 of the available points (score of 55%). Devices earning 80 points (score of 73%) or more are eligible to receive platinum level certification.

“The Galaxy Camera’s UL certification is the latest proof point of Samsung’s overarching commitment to the environment through our Planet First initiative,” said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Telecommunications America. “When you combine this device’s eco-friendly design and packaging with its professional grade imaging quality, full Android capabilities and 4G connectivity, the Galaxy Camera is a great example of true innovation.”

The Galaxy Camera is recognized by UL Environment for its sustainable characteristics including:

• Reduction or elimination of substances of concern, such as PVC, bromine and chlorine

• Improved recyclability – the camera is 87% recyclable1

• Reduced packaging

• Packaging is 98% recyclable

• Energy efficient battery charger

Samsung actively seeks certification of its products to UL Environment to meet international sustainability standards. UL Environment sets minimum requirements for “environmentally preferred” mobile devices by measuring environmentally sensitive materials, energy management, manufacturing and operations, impact to health and environment, product performance, packaging, and product stewardship.

"Achieving platinum certification to UL 2810 is a milestone for Samsung, its customers, and the industry at large," said Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment. “This certification is a platform to clearly communicate a product's environmental performance and it demonstrates a commitment to innovating healthier, more sustainable products for customers and their families."

Samsung and Galaxy Camera are all trademarks of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

Android is a registered trademark of Google.

1Recyclability rate calculations are based on UL’s methodology, UL 2789 Environmental Claim Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Calculation of Estimated Recyclability Rate. Recyclable where programs exist.
